History

The Blackfoot Band was formed in 1975 by Fred Sasakamoose, Doug Cuthand, and Brent Burge. The band was originally called the “Blackfoot Banditos” and was originally a cover band, playing songs by artists such as Led Zeppelin, David Bowie, and Neil Young. In the early days, the band was heavily influenced by traditional Blackfoot music, incorporating elements of the traditional pow-wow style and drumming into their performances.

In the late 1970s, the band began to write and record their own music, and in 1979 they released their debut album, “Blackfoot: Music From the Heart of the Nation.” The album featured songs written by Fred Sasakamoose, Doug Cuthand, and Randy Seaward. The album was a success and helped to establish the band as one of the top Native American acts of the time. The band followed up with the albums “Blood On The Moon” (1982), “Back in the Saddle” (1985), and “Spirit” (1989).

In 1997, the band released their most successful album, “Spirit of the Nation”, which featured the singles “Heart of the Nation”, “Red Man”, and “Walking in the Sun”. Brent Burge is the drummer and vocalist for the band. He is a member of the Gros Ventre Nation and was born in Montana in 1956. He has been playing drums since the late 1970s and is known for his powerful drumming style. Randy Seaward is the keyboardist and vocalist for the band. He is a member of the Ojibwe Nation and was born in Ontario in 1961. He has been playing keyboards since the early 1980s and is known for his improvisational playing style.
